GNFS declares Kantamanto market unsafe
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has raised concerns over the reconstruction of makeshift structures at Kantamanto market following the recent devastating fire.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily, the Head of Public Relations at GNFS, Divisional Officer II Desmond Ackah, noted that although market leaders have introduced some safety measures, the area remains highly vulnerable.
He revealed that the Fire Service had invited market managers to collaborate on strategies to prevent future fires, but the engagement did not yield the expected results.
Ackah stressed that the continued use of makeshift structures creates ongoing challenges, such as restricted access, poor escape routes, and other critical safety hazards.
“Just after the fire management, we even extended an invitation to the market managers of which they did not engage us the way we had wanted to engage them in order to avert future occurrences of this particular disastrous fire that occurred at the place on the second day of January.
“The challenges and issues are still there. The access, the escape routes and those factors that we were complaining about, they are still there. Very not safe,” he said.
