Help Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo – Akosua Manu to Naana Jane

The New Patriotic Party’s 2024 Parliamentary Candidate for the Adentan constituency, Akosua Asaa Manu, has appealed to Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang to intervene in what she describes as the unfair and humiliating treatment of Ghana’s suspended Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo.

In an open letter dated Tuesday, June 10, Akosua Manu called on the Vice President to help restore the dignity of Justice Torkornoo, who she claims is being targeted following her suspension by President John Mahama.

She described the investigations and actions against the Chief Justice as part of a coordinated attempt to bring her public embarrassment.

“Any observer not exercising extreme restraint can only conclude that there is a deliberate and concerted effort not only to remove Madam Torkornoo but also to subject her to the highest possible form of public ridicule,” she wrote.

Akosua Manu recalled the Vice President’s own statements about paving the way for others and referenced the legacies of former Chief Justices Georgina Wood and Sophia Akuffo.

She asked, “Why, then, is she [Torkornoo] not merely being pushed out, but also being bruised and embarrassed on her way out?”

She ended her appeal by urging Naana Jane to speak out and show leadership to stop what she referred to as “a violation of rights” and “a miscarriage of justice.”

Madam Manu stressed that her call was not about shielding anyone from accountability but about protecting the dignity of state institutions and the message it sends to young Ghanaian girls with dreams.
