Here is why Ghana risks U.S. visa sanctions – Ablakwa explains

Ghana could soon face visa sanctions from the United States after being placed on a watchlist by the U.S. State Department due to an increase in student visa overstays. Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa confirmed the news during a press conference in Accra on Thursday, 26th June.

According to Mr. Ablakwa, the U.S. government officially informed Ghana about the issue, stating that 21% of Ghanaian students on U.S. visas have overstayed—well above the acceptable limit of 15%.

“This news came as a surprise and has caused a lot of concern,” he said. “But I can confirm that the government, led by the Honourable Foreign Minister, has met with U.S. officials. These were productive meetings, and we now have formal communication from the U.S. authorities—this is no longer a leaked report.”

He made it clear that Ghana is not being grouped with countries that have serious issues like terrorism, extremism, or state-sponsored violence.

“The U.S. has listed 12 areas of concern for visa sanctions. These include terrorism, extremist safe havens, and visa overstays. For Ghana, the only issue mentioned is student visa overstays,” he explained.

The U.S. data shows that 21% of Ghanaian students did not return home after their studies—breaking the acceptable overstay rule.

Despite the warning, Mr. Ablakwa urged Ghanaians to stay calm. He said Ghana has a good record when it comes to following U.S. immigration rules.

“Our discussions with the U.S. have been positive. They confirmed that Ghana is not linked to terrorism or any such activities. Yes, we have 188 Ghanaians on former President Trump’s deportation list, but our embassies in New York and Washington are cooperating fully,” he said.

He added, “We believe Ghana’s case is not as serious as others, and we shouldn’t be placed in the same category as countries involved in terrorism.”

The government says it will continue to engage U.S. authorities in the coming weeks to ensure Ghana avoids any visa restrictions that could affect students, travellers, and diplomatic ties.
