HOT VIDEO: NSA exposed for using fraud-prone system after GH¢548m scandal
Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), Sulemana Braimah, has revealed that the National Service Scheme (NSS) is still using the same digital system that enabled a GH¢548 million payroll fraud.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, June 14, Mr. Braimah expressed shock that the NSS continues to use the metric app—the same platform involved in the scandal.
“What is strange to me is that the National Service Authority is still using the same metric app that allowed this scandal to happen,” he said.
This comes as investigations continue into how over 81,000 ghost names were used to siphon public funds from the NSS payroll.
Mr. Braimah said red flags had been raised as far back as 2017, when regional directors complained during management meetings about names appearing on the payroll without their approval.
“Regional directors are supposed to authorize names after validation. But names were showing up as already approved,” he explained.
Despite repeated complaints, he said management kept saying, “we’ll look into it,” but nothing changed.
According to Mr. Braimah, the fraud peaked between 2022 and 2023, when almost GH¢350 million was lost in one year alone due to ghost names.
He added that although minor adjustments were made to the system after the scandal broke, they were not enough.
“They started fidgeting with the system, but by then the damage was done.”
Mr. Braimah questioned why the new NSS leadership is still relying on the same flawed platform.
“It’s really strange that the same app is still being used despite all that has happened,” he said, warning that public funds remain at risk.
