How can NPP be reduced to the current situation? – Kufuor quizzed

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has voiced strong concern about the current state of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), describing it as worrisome and a major reason for the party’s loss in the 2024 general election.

Speaking during the official commissioning of the NPP’s Patriotic Institute on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, the respected statesman expressed regret over the direction the party has taken in recent years. According to him, the party’s deviation from its core values and guiding principles has led to its fall from grace.

“How come a party with a philosophy and vision for humanity, that’s the main strength of our tradition, has been reduced to the current situation? A situation we all regret or must regret. How come?” he questioned.

Mr. Kufuor did not mince words in pointing out that the NPP’s challenges did not arise by chance. He urged party leaders and supporters to take a sober look at how the political tide has shifted since 2016, adding that the decline in electoral fortunes was a reflection of growing dissatisfaction among the Ghanaian public.

“This didn’t happen by accident. If we carefully review the electoral history from 2016, 2020 to 2024, and if we are sincere with ourselves, we would recognise that the Ghanaian electorate has matured. Nobody can deceive them,” the former president stated.

He emphasised that the voters’ rejection of the NPP in 2024 was not necessarily because they no longer believed in the party’s ideology, but rather due to the poor direction and leadership that had taken over in recent years.

“I assure you, I believe this electorate, the Ghanaian electorate, not just party supporters, has not rejected the value systems of our tradition,” he added.

Mr. Kufuor’s remarks come at a time when the NPP is facing internal unrest, leadership questions, and growing pressure to reform ahead of the 2028 elections. His comments serve as both a warning and a call to action for the party to return to its roots—grounded in democracy, accountability, and service to the people.

Many party faithful see his statement as a powerful reminder from a leader whose time in office is still fondly remembered for economic stability, peace, and a people-centered governance style.
