I want to rebuild my mechanic shop and return to work – Atta Ayi’s mechanic
Yaw Asante Agyekum, a mechanic recently acquitted after spending 23 years in prison for a wrongful conviction linked to the notorious robber Atta Ayi, is appealing for support to rebuild his life.
In an interview with GHOne TV on Monday, June 9, 2025, he called on Ghanaians to help him return to his work as a mechanic, a trade he was forced to abandon over two decades ago.
Agyekum spoke about his current challenges and appealed to the public for assistance in restoring his old mechanic shop and achieving financial stability.
When asked about compensation from the state, he made it clear that such matters would be handled by his lawyer.
He stressed that his main concern is restarting his work rather than pursuing legal action.
“I have no choice but to work, even at the age of 47. As for compensation, I prefer not to get involved — that is my lawyer’s responsibility. My freedom is what matters most to me, especially the moment I reunited with my children. I can’t specify an exact amount, but my main goal is to rebuild my mechanic shop and return to work,” Agyekum said in the interview.
