If care is not taken NPP party will crack – Asiedu Nketia on NPP internal conflicts

Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has proposed to the opposition New Patriotic Party to adopt what he calls a “universal membership suffrage” to avoid further conflicts within the party.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has scheduled Saturday, January 31, 2026, to hold their presidential primary.

This early primary has become a bone of contention among the members of the party, with some dissenting to the decision by the leadership.

Addressing the NPP’s latest development, Asiedu Nketia, popularly called General Mosquito, advised the party against the early primary, pointing out it may cause confusion.

“What if the regional and district executives’ mandate expires by the time the presidential election is due? It means the party is going to encounter a situation where the delegates who will participate in the voting lack a legitimate mandate to elect a flagbearer. If care is not taken and this happens, it will deepen the cracks in the party,” he said paraphrastically in an interview with Nana Yaw Kesseh on Peace FM’sKokrokoo’ morning show.

Explaining his universal membership suffrage concept, which to him is a solution, he stated it is where all members of the NPP are allowed to elect their flagbearer.

To him, it would be better for the party to use this method if they want stability than to make a few people engage in the election.

General Mosquito also urged the party to be careful of their decision, stating this “top-bottom approach” may also result in a situation where the NPP turns into what he described as a “command party,” adding, this is “undemocratic.”

He explained that should the party first select a flagbearer, it means the flagbearer is going to form a team of executives he can control, which won’t augur well for the NPP.

“The disagreements and agreements all matter to the success of a party,” he emphasized, as paraphrased.

Appearing on ‘Kokrokoo’ for the first time after long years of boycotting the show, Asiedu Nketia officially announced the NDC’s return.
