“Is Akufo-Addo that rich?” – Kwesi Pratt reacts to Ursula Owusu’s claim
The managing editor of The Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr., says he was shocked by some comments made by Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the former minister for communications and digitalization. Ursula had come out boldly to defend former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo after the NPP lost the 2024 elections.
Speaking passionately, Ursula slammed some NPP members who are blaming Akufo-Addo for the party’s loss. According to her, for the past eight years, Akufo-Addo personally used his own money to run the party—from the constituencies to the regional and national offices. She even claimed that he gave MPs extra money every month on top of their salaries.
She said, “If after all his hard work for democracy and the party, we can insult him or gossip about him, and he still takes all the blame without complaining, then we should ask ourselves—if we don’t value people like Akufo-Addo, is it even worth dying for this party?”
But speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo show on Tuesday, veteran journalist Kwesi Pratt reacted with surprise. He said, “Ei! So 127 MPs were getting extra money every month on top of their normal salary, and Akufo-Addo was still spending money on the whole party? Is he that rich?”
Former Subin MP, Eugene Boakye Antwi, also joined the conversation. He didn’t agree with Ursula. He said what she said wasn’t true.
“Nothing like that happened. We never received any top-up from the President,” he stated. He also advised that the blame game should stop and urged everyone to let Akufo-Addo enjoy his retirement in peace.
Ursula Owusu-Ekuful Defends Akufo-Addo
Former Communications and Digitalisation Minister, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has jumped to the defense of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, blasting some members of the NPP who are blaming him for the party’s poor performance in the 2024 elections.
In a passionate message she posted on Facebook, Ursula—known for speaking her mind—said she’s not happy with how some party people are now insulting Akufo-Addo. According to her, these same people would have been praising him if the NPP had won.
“Thank you to all of you busy insulting and blaming him today. I’m sure if we had won, you’d all be giving him the credit,” she wrote.
Ursula reminded everyone that Akufo-Addo has served the NPP faithfully for many years. She said he kept the party united both when it was in opposition for eight years and even during his time in power.
