Just do as Kufuor asked and apologise to Ghanaians – Akufo-Addo told

A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Kobina Arthur Kennedy, has revealed that former President John Agyekum Kufuor has privately advised his successor, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to apologise to Ghanaians for the economic hardships and governance failures experienced during his administration.

Speaking in an interview on TV3 on Saturday, June 28, 2025, Dr. Arthur Kennedy said he picked up this information “from the grapevine,” but nonetheless fully supports the idea.

“I have heard from the grapevine that President Kufuor has suggested to President Akufo-Addo to apologise to Ghanaians. This is advice I agree with. He must apologise,” Dr. Arthur Kennedy stated.

The former NPP presidential aspirant made the remarks during a discussion focused on the party’s internal elections and its future direction. He was frank in his criticism of the Akufo-Addo administration, accusing it of overseeing widespread impunity, corruption, and an arrogant style of governance that ultimately led to economic suffering.

“There was impunity; there was corruption. There was arrogance of power and there was hardship,” he lamented.

Dr. Kennedy’s comments came in the wake of recent concerns raised publicly by former President Kufuor himself. At the launch of the New Patriotic Party’s Patriotic Institute, Mr. Kufuor openly questioned the steady decline in the party’s political fortunes over the years.

“How come our fortunes have been dwindling since 2016, 2020, and now our current state?” the former president asked.

In response, Dr. Kennedy attributed the party’s declining popularity to what he described as poor leadership during President Akufo-Addo’s tenure. He suggested that the administration’s failure to listen to the concerns of ordinary Ghanaians and its handling of the economy contributed significantly to the party’s rejection by voters.

“The electorate endured all that and decided to give them the sack during the election,” he said.
