Kennedy Agyapong’s claim of MMDCEs support FALSE – Bawumia’s spokesman
A spokesperson for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has mounted a strong defence of the recent show of support by over 200 former Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) for the former Vice President’s presidential bid.
Speaking on JoyFM’s Top Story on Monday, June 23, Aboagye dismissed claims that the endorsements were staged or sponsored, describing such allegations from the Kennedy Agyapong camp as politically motivated and a sign of discomfort with Dr. Bawumia’s rising popularity within the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“Well, we are grateful to them. We are not looking for only delegates in this contest to be able to win it. We are looking for human resources as well – individuals who may not necessarily be delegates but have the energy, the resources and the network to give us the numbers that we want,” Aboagye said.
He noted that the campaign values the support of not only delegates but also seasoned grassroots actors like the former MMDCEs, who have deep-rooted influence and experience within the party’s structures.
Responding to allegations by some members of Kennedy Agyapong’s camp that the endorsements were “orchestrated and sponsored,” Aboagye dismissed them as unfounded.
“If we can get 220 people to agree and be sponsored by us to do this, then you can imagine how grateful we’ll be,” he said, suggesting that such coordinated support is evidence of genuine enthusiasm for Dr. Bawumia’s leadership rather than manipulation.
He also referenced previous claims made by Agyapong’s team, where they boasted of having the support of 50 Members of Parliament (MPs). According to Aboagye, Bawumia’s campaign did not respond at the time, but the truth became evident when a large group of MPs personally visited Bawumia to declare their allegiance.
“The MPs themselves, a few days later, drove into Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s office, over 60 of them, and said that we are here. We heard that somebody said 50 of us belong to him. That is not correct. Here we are, and we are here to give you our full commitment and pledge that we are going to support you,” Aboagye revealed.
He criticised the opposing camp’s response to the MPs’ visit, describing their reaction as dismissive and accusatory.
“Quickly they come back and say, no, no, no, it doesn’t matter, it is all staged, all these MPs who came, they have been coerced and all of that,” he added.
When asked directly whether the former MMDCEs were funded or sponsored to publicly support Dr. Bawumia, Aboagye distanced himself from such claims.
“I haven’t said that. I have not. If that is what he [Kwesi Kwarteng] is saying, so be it. I haven’t alluded to it,” he said.
He went on to stress the value and experience the former MMDCEs bring to the party, dismissing attempts to downplay their role.
“The former MMDCEs, a lot of them, have worked and contributed to this party than some of these people making this comment. We have people who have served as constituency chairmen for 12 years, 16 years, people who have served as constituency secretaries for 12 to 16 years,” Aboagye explained.
In conclusion, Aboagye reiterated that the Bawumia team remains focused and determined to use every legitimate strategy available to secure victory in the party’s upcoming presidential primaries and eventually in the national election.
“We are going to deploy every political arsenal to win the next elections and make sure that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s vision and dream for this party and this country come to fruition,” he stated.
