Kufuor looked on while Akufo-Addo inflicted hardship on Ghanaians – Kufuor chops ‘stray bullet’
A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications Team, Richard Nii Aryee, has criticised former President John Agyekum Kufuor for asking former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to apologise to Ghanaians over economic hardships and governance failures under their leadership.
This follows a recent revelation by Dr Kobina Arthur Kennedy, a leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who disclosed during an interview on TV3 on Saturday, June 28, 2025, that former President Kufuor had advised Akufo-Addo to apologise. Dr Arthur Kennedy said he got this information “from the grapevine” and fully supported the idea.
“I have heard from the grapevine that President Kufuor has suggested to President Akufo-Addo to apologise to Ghanaians. This is advice I agree with. He must apologise,” he said.
Reacting to this on Kasapa FM, Nii Aryee described Kufuor’s call as hypocritical, saying the former president remained silent during Akufo-Addo’s entire tenure, even when Ghanaians were suffering under his leadership.
“Kufuor looked on while Akufo-Addo inflicted hardship on Ghanaians,” he said. “He was completely silent on the many wrongs of that administration. When $58 million was spent just to dig a hole for the National Cathedral—after Ghanaians were told no state funds would be used—did we hear a word from Kufuor? Not even once.”
Nii Aryee also brought up the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP), which had a negative impact on many bondholders and pensioners, saying Kufuor did not comment publicly even during that time.
“There were a lot of harsh policies and actions that hurt Ghanaians, but Kufuor never condemned them. He didn’t even pass a comment. He simply failed to call out the rot in the Akufo-Addo government,” he added.
He concluded that Kufuor’s silence during the difficult times under Akufo-Addo’s administration disqualifies him from now calling for accountability.
“Ex-President Kufuor has no moral right to now tell Ghanaians that Akufo-Addo and Bawumia should apologise. He had every opportunity to speak, but he chose silence,” Nii Aryee stated.
