Man Drowns in Offin River
A man has tragically drowned after the canoe he was using to cross the Offin River at Achiase-Atumtuma in the Ashanti Region overturned.
The deceased, identified by police as Kwaku Ekow, was reportedly pulled out of the water by some Good Samaritans, but sadly, he was already unresponsive.
According to a statement from the Nyinahin District Police—under the Nkwawie Divisional Command—the incident happened around 1:30 p.m. on June 19, 2025.
As detailed in the police report seen by DAILY GUIDE, “Kwaku Ekow, age unknown, was on board a canoe crossing the Offin River at Atumtuma.
“In the process, the canoe capsized, and he fell into the river and got drowned,” the statement added, indicating that the situation posed an immediate threat to his life.
After the incident was reported, a search party quickly organized a dive into the river to look for Ekow. He was found a short time later but was already dead.
The Unit Committee Chairman of Achiase-Atumtuma Electoral Area, Prince Barnie, informed the Adobewura Police about the tragedy. According to his report, “one Kwaku Ekow, aged unknown, was on board a canoe crossing the Offin River at Atumtuma.”
Police officers who arrived at the scene found the deceased lying on the riverbank, having already been retrieved by local residents.
“The body was photographed and conveyed to the community mortuary, Nyinahin, for preservation and autopsy,” the police said. They also noted that investigations into the matter are currently ongoing.
