‘Monsters’ within NPP caused our defeat in 2024 – Kennedy Agyapong

Former Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to stop blaming their electoral defeat on the party’s bottom-to-top election structure.

Addressing constituency chairmen during a party conference in Kumasi on Saturday, June 21, 2025, Agyapong made it clear that the real issue was not with the electoral system itself but with certain individuals within the party who were given too much power and ended up misusing it.

“There is nothing wrong with the system that we have from bottom: polling station, electoral area, constituency, regional, national and presidential; why you find something wrong is that, I’m telling you, if you like take it, if you don’t, so be it,” he said.

He added that some leaders within the party had become “monsters” who made reckless decisions, which badly affected the party’s fortunes.

“It is because we created monsters in the party and allowed them to take decisions anyhow that affected us, we need to solve this problem,” he stated.

Kennedy Agyapong also pointed out that party members who spoke out or shared different views were often removed from their positions, from the regional level down to the polling stations. According to him, this lack of tolerance for opposing views weakened the party from within.

He warned the NPP not to rush into choosing a presidential candidate without first resolving its internal problems. He argued that no presidential candidate could succeed if the internal challenges were left unchecked.

“We have to solve all internal problems before we rush to go and select a presidential candidate, honestly if we do not solve these problems and you think by electing a presidential candidate, he can solve the problems, I’m afraid, we are joking; the presidential candidate cannot solve the problems alone,” he cautioned.

Mr. Agyapong emphasized the need for unity, introspection, and shared responsibility. He said the party must come together and fix its internal issues or risk losing its relevance and future.
