NDC will soon start experiencing internal conflicts – Old video of Afenyo-Markin surfaces

Minority Leader in Parliament Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin has predicted that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) will soon face serious internal confusion and power struggles that will divide the party and weaken their chances in the 2028 general elections.

According to the Effutu Member of Parliament, although the NDC is currently enjoying power after winning the 2024 election, they will soon face the same challenges that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) went through after their time in office. He believes that the process of selecting a new flagbearer to replace President John Dramani Mahama will cause major disagreement within the NDC and may lead to voter apathy, especially in their strongholds.

Afenyo-Markin made these comments in a video that has been circulating on social media. In the video, he is seen speaking to some supporters of the NPP and encouraging them to remain strong and united despite the painful defeat the party suffered in the last election. He assured them that the NDC’s victory will soon be short-lived due to internal fights and confusion over leadership succession.

“The NDC will soon start experiencing internal conflicts. Everything they accused us of, they will do even worse. They will face leadership issues, especially since President Mahama has only one term, and they will suffer from even greater voter apathy in the 2028 elections,” he said.

He added that some NPP supporters were feeling discouraged because of what happened in the 2024 elections, where John Mahama defeated Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia with 56.55% of the total votes compared to the NPP’s 41.31%. However, he urged them to look beyond the disappointment and focus on the future. He reminded them that no political party is free from challenges and that the NDC would also go through tough times soon.

“Forget about yesterday and move on. These people will start experiencing internal conflicts—you will be shocked. Every single thing they used against us, you will realize they will do even worse. They will also face leadership issues. Mahama has just one term, so they will have to bring in a new leader. When it was our turn, they made fun of us—no problem. In 2028, apathy will be on their side,” Afenyo-Markin noted.

The Minority Leader also talked about voter turnout in the last election. He pointed out that even though the Ashanti Region, which is the stronghold of the NPP, recorded 67% turnout, the Volta Region, the NDC’s stronghold, recorded only 65%. The Greater Accra Region had only 55% turnout despite the high level of campaigning.

“Even if you look at the turnout—they say in the Ashanti Region we recorded only 67%, but they had just 65% turnout in the Volta Region. Now that they are in power, their apathy level will increase. In the Greater Accra Region, with all the noise, voter turnout was only 55%,” he added.

Afenyo-Markin said the NPP should not panic because all governments go through difficulties when heading into an election, and what the party needs now is unity and a renewed commitment to reorganize and reconnect with the grassroots.

“That happened when our own base didn’t vote, so nobody in our party should be worried. Any government going into an election faces the challenge of apathy. So we just have to stick together. They can share all the money in the world, they can say they will buy every media house—so be it. Time will expose all of this,” he said.

He also claimed that Ghanaians would soon begin to see the true nature of the NDC administration. In his view, the NDC’s success in 2024 was not based on their superior performance or ideas, but rather on the frustrations Ghanaians had with the NPP government at the time due to economic hardships and other challenges.

“Let us be calm. We should reorganize, and regroup. Let’s reconnect with our people. They have had their turn. Time will tell. You will see. What they said we did, they will do ten times over.

His comments come at a time when the NPP is going through serious introspection after its painful defeat. Many leading members of the party have been urging the rank and file not to lose hope but to use the defeat as an opportunity to rebuild the party stronger and more united. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the 2024 flagbearer of the NPP, is currently on a nationwide “Thank You” tour where he is meeting with party faithful, encouraging them, and apologizing for the loss.

At a recent meeting with the party’s members in London, Dr. Bawumia openly took responsibility for the NPP’s defeat and promised to listen more and correct past mistakes.

Afenyo-Markin’s prediction of internal conflict in the NDC also touches on a larger question many political watchers are asking: who will lead the NDC after Mahama’s final term? President Mahama has publicly stated that 2024 was his last attempt at the presidency. This means the NDC will need a new flagbearer for the 2028 election.

Some political experts believe the process to choose Mahama’s successor could become very competitive and possibly create factions within the party if not managed well. Others think the NDC may have already started grooming someone quietly behind the scenes. However, one thing is clear: if the NDC doesn’t manage the succession well, it could open the door for the NPP to return to power in 2028, especially if they present a united front.

For now, Ghanaians are watching closely. The economy, job creation, and the cost of living remain top concerns for many citizens. Both the NDC and the NPP will have to work hard to win back the trust of the people, especially the youth who form a large percentage of the voting population.

In the meantime, Afenyo-Markin says the NPP should prepare seriously for the 2026 local government elections and focus on rebuilding the party’s structures from the polling station level to the national level. According to him, this is the only way the party can bounce back and win in 2028.

“Let’s learn our lessons and move forward. The 2024 elections are over. We must now look at 2026 and 2028. We need unity, hard work, and vision. If we do these things, we can win again.”
