Nkwanta turns ugly as two more youths shot
Fear and uncertainty have once again gripped residents of the Nkwanta South Municipality in the Oti Region, following the shooting of two young men from the Konkomba community.
The victims, Ujakpa Nakoja and Niyasangma Joseph, were both shot by unidentified attackers at Abrewankor Junction, a location not far from their hometown of Pawa, a farming community within the municipality.
The two were immediately rushed to St. Joseph Hospital and Medical Village, both located in Nkwanta South. According to reports, they remain in critical condition and are receiving emergency treatment.
This latest act of violence has heightened concerns over safety and security in the area, which has seen its share of unrest in recent times.
In response, several respected figures from the Konkomba community have come forward to urge for calm. These include Dr. Joshua Makubu and Deputy Superintendent of Prisons (DSP) Daniel Machator, both of whom are former Oti Regional Ministers, as well as Ubor Tassan Konja VI, the Kpassa-Wura (chief of Kpassa).
These leaders are calling on the community to remain peaceful and to resist the urge to retaliate.
“Let peace prevail; let us choose dialogue over war,” they emphasized.
They reminded community members that the path of violence often leads to more suffering and loss, particularly for innocent people caught in the middle.
The leaders also highlighted the long-standing tradition of peaceful coexistence between the Konkomba and other ethnic groups in the region, including the Adele, Challa, and Akyode communities. They described the people as bound by shared histories and encouraged everyone to work together to preserve the peace.
As investigations continue, they appealed to residents to cooperate with law enforcement agencies, assuring them that justice will be served for those affected by the recent violence.
