NPP isn’t happy Ghana is doing well – NDC’s understanding

The Bolgatanga Constituency Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Isaac Ayemvoa, popularly known as Understanding, says the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is unhappy with the recent gains made by the Ghanaian cedi on the forex market.

Speaking on Breakfast Today on Dreamz FM on Wednesday, June 19, 2025, Mr. Ayemvoa accused the NPP of wishing for further depreciation of the cedi and a rising cost of living just to gain political advantage ahead of the 2028 elections.

“They would have wished that the cedi hadn’t come down. Meanwhile, myself and him go to the market. That lizard rice that was somewhere 300 and plus, today you buy it at 250. That oil last month that you could buy at 700 Ghana, you are buying it around 500 Ghana. He’s not happy,” he said.

He was reacting to criticism from the NPP over the government’s new tax measure — the GH¢1 per litre levy on petroleum products — introduced under the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill, passed by Parliament on June 3, 2025.

The Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, who laid the bill, explained that the levy was crucial to addressing the massive energy sector debt and ensuring stable electricity supply nationwide.

However, the NPP slammed the levy, describing it as an unnecessary burden and betrayal of public trust.

Defending the decision, Mr. Ayemvoa insisted the government had managed the economy well and significantly reduced prices of major goods, making the levy bearable for consumers.

“Ghana government has managed the cedi so well such that we are giving a respite of say five cedis and six cedis. Using that, we are saying that just give us one cedi out of that. Let’s use that and sustain our gains in the energy sector,” he argued.

He added that the Ghanaian public would support the move because “they know that the government is truthful.”
