NPP Presidential Primaries: I believe in Bawumia – Akuapim North MP

Sammi Awuku, Member of Parliament for Akuapim North, has declared his full confidence in the leadership qualities of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the 2024 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who has signalled his intention to contest again in the 2028 presidential election.

According to the Akuapim North MP, Dr. Bawumia remains the most suitable and dependable candidate for the party going into the next general election.

Dr. Bawumia, who led the NPP in the 2024 polls but lost, has indicated his readiness to lead the party again. The party’s Council of Elders and National Executive Council, during a meeting on June 17, 2025, set January 2026 for the flagbearer race.

In an interview on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Thursday, June 19, 2025, Mr. Awuku insisted that Dr. Bawumia is still the most attractive candidate to secure victory for the NPP in 2028. He praised the former Vice President’s performance during difficult moments in government, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic and global economic turmoil caused by the Russia-Ukraine war.

“I believe Dr. Bawumia presents us with a very good opportunity to win 2028,” Awuku stated.

“Some of us are of the unshaken belief that the difficulties we faced as a government over the last four years — the post-COVID era, economies around the world in turmoil, the global shocks and all — Dr. Bawumia did a good job.”

He also highlighted Bawumia’s perseverance, leadership record, and personal values as the foundation of his strong support.

“He stood in the gap for the NPP, and in his personal achievement and records, his character, and the strength of his character, and the integrity that he also has,” Awuku added.

So far, Dr. Bawumia has secured the endorsement of about 60 sitting Members of Parliament, a significant boost that could favour his chances in the 2026 primaries if the support reflects broadly among party delegates.

However, he will face stiff competition from other notable NPP figures including former Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and MP for Abetifi and former Agriculture Minister Dr. Bryan Acheampong.
