‘NPP will come back into gov’t in 2028 and I will be president’ – Bawumia
Former Vice President and NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, says he strongly believes the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will come back to power in the 2028 elections.
Speaking to NPP members in London, Dr Bawumia said history shows that in Ghana, it’s very hard for a political party to win an election with a brand-new candidate after the sitting president has done two terms.
He believes this will work in NPP’s favour in 2028.
“In Ghana, it’s not easy for a new presidential candidate to win after their party has done two terms. So if NDC brings someone new in 2028, we will have the upper hand,” Bawumia said.
He also said Ghanaians will judge the NDC based on the big promises they made before winning the 2024 election. And if they fail to deliver, the NPP will have a good chance.
“When they were in opposition, they promised heaven and earth — said they’ll reduce cost of living and all. But now prices are even going up,” he pointed out.
Dr Bawumia didn’t shy away from admitting that NPP didn’t do well in the 2024 elections. He apologized to party supporters.
“Yes, we worked hard. But we didn’t get everything right. Some mistakes were made. So I want to say sorry to all of you, from me and the party,” he said.
Still, he remains hopeful.
“By God’s grace, if Ghanaians give us another chance, we’ll do better. We’ve learnt our lessons,” he added.
After the 2024 loss, a 12-member committee, led by former Speaker Prof. Mike Oquaye, was asked to find out what went wrong. They’ve finished their work and submitted a report, but the party says the findings are private and won’t be made public.
In the 2024 elections, NPP lost heavily. John Mahama of the NDC won with 56.55% (6,328,397 votes), while Bawumia got 41.61% (4,657,304 votes).
