Ofori-Atta was a very fine finance minister, doesn’t deserve this unfortunate treatment — Freddie Blay

Former NPP National Chairman Frederick Worsemao Armah Blay has defended former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta’s record in office.

Ofori-Atta, who served from 2017 until his reassignment in early 2024, was heavily criticised for Ghana’s economic challenges. Despite calls for his dismissal, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, his cousin, kept him in office until he was replaced by Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam.

Speaking to Oyerepa TV on Saturday, June 14, Blay said Ofori-Atta served with dedication.

“Ken Ofori-Atta was a very fine Finance Minister—resolute and focused,” he said.

Blay insisted the economic crisis was not the fault of the government. “Under the circumstances, the NPP government will be remembered as one of the best, regardless of people’s views,” he added.

Ofori-Atta is currently under investigation by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) over suspected corruption, including the National Cathedral project and the SML scandal.

He has been placed on an Interpol red notice while reportedly undergoing medical treatment in the UK.

Blay expressed concern over how Ofori-Atta, Dr. Ernest Addison, and others are being treated. He warned that such actions could discourage qualified people from serving in government.
