Police shoot and kill armed robber in ‘Rambo style’ gun fight on Kumasi-Bibiani road

Police have confirmed a violent confrontation between officers and five suspected highway robbers on the Kumasi-Bibiani Road, which resulted in the death of one suspect, according to a report by dailyguidenetwork.com. The remaining four suspects managed to escape but are believed to be injured from gunshot wounds sustained during the exchange.

The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. on June 2, 2025, when the suspects reportedly stopped two vehicles carrying passengers, holding them at gunpoint with the intent to rob them. Their criminal plans, however, were interrupted when a police patrol team arrived at the scene.

According to a police statement signed by DSP Godwin Ahianyo of the Ashanti Regional Police Public Affairs Department, the suspects, who were armed with a pump-action shotgun, opened fire immediately upon seeing the officers. The police responded swiftly with return fire, leading to the fatal shooting of one of the suspects. He was later confirmed dead at the Afari Government Hospital by medical professionals.

“Upon sighting the police, the suspects armed with the pump action gun, opened fire on the patrol team.

“The officers responded swiftly, returning fire and fatally wounding one of the suspects, who was later confirmed dead by a medical doctor at the Afari Government Hospital,” the statement read.

The four other suspects fled into the surrounding area during the gun battle and are currently at large. Police believe that the suspects who escaped are injured and may seek medical attention for their wounds.

Due to this, police have urged all health facilities, especially those near the Kumasi-Bibiani stretch, to be vigilant. Medical practitioners and the general public are advised to report anyone seeking treatment for unexplained gunshot wounds to the nearest police station.

“The Police are, therefore, appealing to all medical facilities and practitioners to be on the lookout and report any persons presenting with gunshot injuries to the nearest police station,” DSP Ahianyo said.

He added that the body of the deceased suspect has been placed in the morgue at the Afari Government Hospital for preservation and further investigations. The police are also working to identify the deceased and trace his connections to the robbery gang.

In his statement, DSP Ahianyo praised the Nkawie Patrol Team for their rapid response and professionalism. He said their bravery in the face of armed criminals helped prevent a potentially deadly robbery and protected innocent lives.

He also called on the public to support the police by sharing any information that could lead to the arrest of the fleeing suspects. He stressed the importance of community cooperation in ensuring security and safety along Ghana’s major roads, especially those that have become hotspots for armed robbery.

This incident is the latest in a series of robbery-related confrontations on the Kumasi-Bibiani route, which has seen a rise in attacks on travellers in recent months. The Ghana Police Service has promised to intensify patrols in the area and strengthen collaboration with local communities to track down the suspects and prevent future attacks.

As investigations continue, the police have assured the public that every effort is being made to bring the remaining suspects to justice and restore calm and safety to the affected road corridor.
