Poor people can also be president – Bawumia hit back at Ken Agyapong

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has stirred public debate with a bold statement he made during a meeting with over 200 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs). He declared that “poor individuals can also lead Ghana as Presidents.”

His comment comes not long after Kennedy Agyapong reportedly told some party constituency chairmen that he could raise $7 million with just one phone call to support internal party elections.

These two contrasting remarks have sparked fresh conversations within political circles. Many people see Dr. Bawumia’s statement as a call for more fairness and inclusiveness in the country’s political system—suggesting that leadership shouldn’t be reserved for only the wealthy or financially powerful.

Some political watchers believe Dr. Bawumia’s words were a subtle jab at money-driven politics. Others think he was using the platform to rally grassroots support as political campaigns begin to heat up ahead of the next elections.
