Chelsea look to change tack with pursuit of 28 year old wanted by Tottenham

Chelsea are constantly linked with young players, as their model over the last couple of years has been to hoover up the top stars under 23 to try and build a team for the future.

This season has shown the weaknesses of pursuing that strategy too purely however, with a major lack of experience costing us at times.

So we’re not surprised to see some more mature heads being linked with us now – especially if they can be had at a bargain price.

SportWitness today carries claims from Germany that Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah is a top target for us. He’s 28, and would likely fill the veteran role that Thiago Silva is about to vacate.

The problem is that Tottenham are also linked, and they can offer him European football which we probably won’t be able to. Long gone are the days where we could persuade a player with a bigger offer too. As well as signing young players, our new strategy is to keep wages down.
