Sammy Gyamfi on the hot seat again over Goldbod’s $3bn spending overrun
The Member of Parliament for Tano North and a member of Parliament’s Finance Committee, Dr Gideon Boako, has raised serious red flags about how the Sammy Gyamfi-led Ghana Gold Board (Goldbod) is handling its finances.
According to Dr Boako, Goldbod has spent a whopping $3 billion this year, even though the government only gave them $279 million in the 2025 national budget.
“The budget said $279 million, but they’ve already spent $3 billion? How is that possible?” he asked during an interview with JoyNews on Wednesday, 21st May.
Where’s the Extra Money Coming From?
Dr Boako is calling for full transparency. He wants the government and Goldbod to explain where the extra money is coming from.
“We need to know if this money came from donors, loans, or maybe gold-backed deals,” he said.
He added that Parliament has not been properly informed about this huge gap in spending, and that’s not acceptable.
“This is a public agency. It uses Ghana’s resources. Parliament and the people of Ghana must be told the truth,” he insisted.
Public Confidence at Risk
Dr Boako warned that if this issue is not addressed quickly, it could cause Ghanaians to lose trust in the work of Goldbod and the government as a whole.
“We are not saying Goldbod should not spend money. But when you go from $279 million to $3 billion, people will start asking questions,” he said.
He continued, “If the government is borrowing or entering into special gold deals behind the scenes, let’s be honest and open about it. Otherwise, it creates doubt and suspicion.”
Calls for Accountability
Dr Boako said it’s now time for Parliament to formally summon Goldbod and the Ministry of Finance to come and explain what’s going on.
“Parliament must step in. We need a briefing. This kind of expenditure cannot go unaccounted for,” he stressed.
He said public funds—especially amounts as large as this—should never be spent in secrecy. “Ghanaians deserve to know how every pesewa is being used,” he said.
Dr Boako made it clear that this is not about politics, but about accountability. He said that even if the money is being used for good purposes, proper communication and transparency are key.
“This is not about NPP or NDC. It’s about responsible governance. Whether you’re using the money to buy gold, pay contractors, or build reserves—we must know.”
He ended by urging government officials to be open with the people and work with Parliament to ensure the right thing is done.
Sammy Gyamfi and Agradaa saga
The so-called “Sammy Gyamfi and Agradaa saga” appears to be a conflation of two separate controversies involving different individuals.
