Thank you Bryan Acheampong for the GH₵50m bail – Wontumi’s Lawyer
The lawyer for embattled Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako—popularly known as Chairman Wontumi—has disclosed that former Agriculture Minister, Bryan Acheampong, played a major role in helping secure his client’s GH₵50 million bail.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with JoyNews on Friday, May 30, legal counsel Andy Appiah-Kubi confirmed that all bail requirements had been successfully met, with Mr Bryan Acheampong providing property documents that surpassed the required financial value.
“We have been able to provide the sureties, that one, I can assure you, and I’m very grateful to Honourable Bryan Acheampong, who has supported me to file the documents,” Mr Appiah-Kubi said.
“He has brought his documents, which go over and above the value of money that is required. So I thank him very much.”

Bail Conditions Met, But Chairman Wontumi Still in Custody
Chairman Wontumi, arrested over allegations of fraud, money laundering, and other financial crimes, was granted bail by EOCO with a GH₵50 million bond and two sureties—both to be justified. Although it took several days, his legal team eventually fulfilled all requirements by Friday.
However, despite the breakthrough, Chairman Wontumi remains in EOCO custody.
Fresh Legal Application Stalls His Release
Appiah-Kubi revealed that a new court application filed by unidentified persons has temporarily blocked Wontumi’s release—even though all bail conditions have been met.
“My client is not going home tonight. We encountered a challenge that needs to be addressed before we can go forward,” he explained.
“Unknown to me, there was an application to frustrate what we are doing… It is an application that was not filed by my good self, but that prohibits us. We’ll deal with it on Monday.”
Health Condition Stable – No Hunger Strike
The lawyer also cleared the air about Wontumi’s health, dismissing rumours that he was on a hunger strike.
He explained that a planned meeting between Chairman Wontumi and former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia could not take place due to the difficulty of coordinating such an event under the current circumstances.
“We had brought him to meet with the former Vice President, but the situation we saw was difficult—to arrange this meeting, to pass through the crowd… So we had to take him back.
His condition of health requires attention, so he’s receiving attention and there’s nothing to worry about.”
NPP Rallies Behind Wontumi Amid Political Tension
Chairman Wontumi’s arrest has sparked widespread public and political reactions. Several top NPP officials, including Dr. Bawumia and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, have visited him in custody, while crowds of supporters have gathered at EOCO and NIB headquarters demanding his release.
According to Mr Appiah-Kubi, unless the latest court action is withdrawn or resolved, Wontumi will remain in custody until at least Monday, June 2.
