There’s going to be thunder, heavy rains and flash floods – Meteo agency warns
The Head of the Central Analysis and Forecasting Office at the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet), Madam Felicity Ahafianyo, is warning Ghanaians to get ready for more heavy rains and possible flash floods in the coming weeks.
She gave this advice after the terrible floods that hit parts of the country on Sunday, May 18. The heavy rains flooded whole communities in Accra, Kumasi, and other big towns. Thousands of people were forced to leave their homes, properties were destroyed, and sadly, three people died in Adenta.
While speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story on Monday, May 19, Madam Ahafianyo explained that the country hasn’t even reached the peak of the rainy season yet, and more rain is on the way.
What she said
“We are getting to the peak of the rainy season — we are yet to enter into it,” she said. “So by the close of next week into the first week of June, or towards the end, we are likely to be getting more of these rains. And definitely, there will be flash floods here and there.”
She advised people living in flood-prone areas to take steps to protect themselves, including moving to safer places if possible and obeying advice from emergency officers.
“If you are around flood-prone areas, we need to relocate and listen to the officers that have been assigned to us,” she stressed.
Madam Ahafianyo also called on everyone to help prevent flooding in their communities. She pointed out that blocked gutters make the flooding worse, especially during the rainy season.
“If our gutters are choked, let us try as much as possible to do communal labour to desilt the gutters,” she urged.
She encouraged the public to stay updated with GMet’s weather alerts online.
“And let us also keep ourselves tuned to GMet’s social media handles for weather updates.”
