These parts of Ghana to experience heavy rain and thunderstorms today – Ghana Meteo

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) says most parts of the country will experience fair weather today, Monday, May 26, 2025, with some mist, fog patches, and isolated thunderstorms expected in certain areas.

In its 24-hour forecast released this morning, GMet gave a clear picture of how the weather is expected to behave across the country — from the coastal areas to the forest zones and into the savannah regions in the north.

Morning Conditions: Mist and Fog Over Coastal and Forest Areas

According to GMet, the day will start off calm and partly cloudy for most regions. But for people living in the coastal areas, forest belts, and mountainous zones, the morning could be a bit tricky.

Places like Takoradi, Axim, Ho, and Koforidua are expected to experience early morning mist and patches of fog. This may cause low visibility, especially on roads and highways.

Motorists and ommercial drivers who move around early in the morning are advised to drive with care, as the fog might make it difficult to see clearly on the road.

The mist and fog are expected to lift gradually as the sun rises.

Daytime: Sun, Clouds, and Possible Showers

As we move deeper into the day, sunny intervals and periods of cloudiness are expected across the country. So people in places like Accra, Cape Coast, Kumasi, and Sekondi can expect bright skies with some clouds.

But the story may be different for some areas, especially in the middle and northern parts of Ghana.

GMet warns that there is a chance of isolated rain or thunderstorms later in the afternoon and evening for some towns. These areas include:

  • Koforidua

  • Akim Oda

  • Tarkwa

  • Goaso

  • Sunyani

  • Tamale

  • Yendi

  • Damongo

  • Wa

  • Bolgatanga

The likelihood of thunderstorms happening in these towns is between 30% and 60%, so people living in these places should prepare just in case rain comes unexpectedly.

Northern Sector: Hot Weather With Possible Storms

For our brothers and sisters up north, today will be hot and dry during the day, but they should also be on the lookout for evening thunderstorms.

Towns like Damongo and Bole are expected to experience maximum temperatures of up to 36°C. Meanwhile, Bolgatanga and Nalerigu may hit highs of 38°C, making them some of the hottest spots in Ghana today.

Even with the heat, isolated thunderstorms are still possible later in the day in these areas. So, if you are in the north, especially in the Upper East or Northern Regions, you might want to carry an umbrella or a raincoat — just in case.

Farmers are also advised to monitor the skies and adjust their farm activities accordingly.

Southern Sector: Moderate Heat With Sunshine and Clouds

In the southern parts of Ghana, including the cities of Accra, Cape Coast, and Kumasi, the weather is expected to be generally fair.

The forecast predicts a mix of sunshine and cloud cover, with temperatures ranging between 31°C and 33°C in the afternoon.

Although these areas will be hot during the day, the temperature is expected to drop slightly by evening, providing some comfort for night-time activities.

There is also a lower chance of rain in these southern cities today, though GMet still advises everyone to remain alert.

Travel and Farming Advice From GMet

The Ghana Meteorological Agency is urging the public to take weather updates seriously, especially those who are always on the move or work outdoors.

Here are some useful tips from GMet for today:

  • Drivers and commuters: Drive with caution in the early morning hours if you’re in mist-prone areas like Ho, Koforidua, and Axim.

  • Farmers: If you’re planning to work on your farm, especially in the middle and northern sectors, watch the weather carefully. Don’t ignore dark clouds or thunder in the distance.

  • Market women and traders: Plan your market activities with the weather in mind. Unexpected rains in the afternoon could affect open stalls.

  • Parents and schools: If your children walk long distances home, make sure they have some form of cover in case of rain later in the day.

  • Everyone else: Stay hydrated, especially in the northern zones where the heat is expected to be intense.

GMet encourages all Ghanaians to stay updated by following their regular announcements through radio, TV, social media, or their official website.
