‘This is cedi, not dollar’ – President Mahama’s playful said after he gifts performers at the “No Fees Stress”

President John Dramani Mahama added a touch of humour to the launch of the No Fees Stress Policy in Koforidua on Friday, July 4, 2025, by giving a cash gift to spoken word performers as a show of appreciation.

As he handed over the money, the president was heard saying, “This is cedi, not dollar,” a remark that drew loud laughter and cheers from the crowd.

The moment quickly became the highlight of the day, with many interpreting it as a subtle, playful jab in light of recent controversy involving a cash gift between the Ghana Gold Board CEO, Sammy Gyamfi, and evangelist Nana Agradaa.

Despite the light moment, the gesture was also seen as a show of support for young creatives whose performance added colour to the event.

The launch also marked the official implementation of the No Fees Stress Policy, a key promise from John Mahama’s 2024 presidential campaign.

The policy aims to eliminate financial barriers for first-year students entering public tertiary institutions, offering relief to families facing economic challenges.

It is part of the President’s broader Reset Ghana agenda, which seeks to uplift the youth and reduce financial burdens on vulnerable households.
