Today’s Weather Forecasts: Watch out for evening thunderstorms across Ghana

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has released a 24-hour weather forecast and is calling on all Ghanaians to prepare for cloudy conditions and possible rainfall, especially in the southern parts of the country. Thunderstorms are expected later in the day, and people are advised to stay alert.

According to GMet, misty and cloudy weather is expected in the early hours of the morning, particularly in areas along the coast, the forest zone, and the mountainous parts of southern Ghana. There could be isolated rain showers in some coastal and inland towns as the morning progresses.

What to Expect During the Day

Southern Ghana (including Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi, Ho, and Cape Coast) will mostly experience cloudy weather with some sunshine trying to break through.

Northern Ghana (including Tamale, Yendi, and Bolgatanga) is expected to be sunny and dry throughout most of the day.

But don’t be deceived by the calm daytime weather.

From late afternoon into the evening, thunderstorms and rain showers are likely to hit several areas across the country. This means people should be careful as strong winds, lightning, and heavy rain may occur in some places.

City-by-City Forecast

Here’s a breakdown of the forecast for major towns and cities:

Accra, Kasoa, and Cape Coast

Expect some light rain or drizzle in the morning. Later in the evening, there is a 30–40% chance of thunderstorms. Keep an umbrella or raincoat close if you’re stepping out.

Takoradi and Axim

Scattered thunderstorms are expected throughout the day. If you’re in these areas, it’s best to plan your movements and avoid unnecessary outdoor activity when the rains begin.

Koforidua, Ho, and Akim Oda

The day will start with misty or foggy weather, but thunderstorms are likely to develop by evening. If you drive early in the morning, please be extra careful because visibility may be poor.

Kumasi and Sunyani

The morning will be partly cloudy, but there’s a 40% chance of evening thunderstorms. People in these areas should prepare accordingly.

Tamale, Yendi, and Bolgatanga

These northern cities will enjoy clear, sunny skies during the day, perfect for outdoor work or errands. However, evening thunderstorms are possible, with up to a 40% chance.

Rough Sea Warning – Mariners Beware

GMet also issued a warning to mariners and coastal dwellers:

“The sea is rough today. Fisherfolk and people living along the coast should exercise caution.”

If you’re planning any activities at sea or along the shores, it is best to postpone or take proper safety precautions.

GMet Advice to the Public

The Ghana Meteorological Agency is encouraging everyone—especially people living in areas known for floods or heavy rain—to take note of the forecast and plan their activities wisely.

Here’s what they advise:

Avoid staying under trees or electric poles during thunderstorms.

Stay indoors when lightning begins.

Drivers should slow down on wet or foggy roads.

Farmers and workers in open fields should monitor the sky for signs of heavy rain or thunder.

If you live in flood-prone communities, be alert and have an emergency plan in place.

Stay Informed and Safe

Weather in Ghana can change quickly, especially during the rainy season. GMet continues to monitor the situation and will provide updates if the conditions worsen.

Take an umbrella with you, charge your phone, and check the weather before heading out. Our weather may be unpredictable, but with the right information, we can all stay safe and dry.

How to Protect Yourself During Thunderstorms and Heavy Rain

Thunderstorms and heavy rain are common in Ghana, especially during the rainy season. These natural events can be dangerous, so it’s important to take steps to stay safe. Here are some simple tips to protect yourself and your loved ones:

1. Stay Indoors:

The safest place during a thunderstorm is inside a strong building. Avoid staying outside under trees, in open fields, or near metal objects like gates and poles. If you’re at home, close all windows and doors to prevent water from entering.

2. Avoid Electrical Appliances:

During a thunderstorm, lightning can strike power lines. Avoid using electrical appliances like TVs, radios, and microwaves. Unplug them if you can. Don’t use your mobile phone while it is charging either.

3. Stay Away from Water:

Do not take a bath, wash clothes, or use tap water during a thunderstorm. Lightning can travel through plumbing and water pipes. Also, avoid walking or driving through floodwater—it can be deeper and more dangerous than it looks.

4. Protect Important Items:

Move important documents and electronics to higher shelves to keep them dry in case of flooding. If possible, use waterproof containers to store valuables.

5. Listen to Weather Updates:

Always check weather forecasts from the Ghana Meteorological Agency or trusted radio stations. Pay attention to warnings about thunderstorms or heavy rain and follow the advice given.

6. Have an Emergency Kit:

Keep a small bag with items like a flashlight, batteries, first aid supplies, bottled water, and snacks. It will help you stay comfortable and safe if the power goes off or you have to move quickly.

By following these steps, you can reduce the risks and stay safe during thunderstorms and heavy rain.
