Watch reactions as Goaso chiefs impose GHS50 funeral levy

The Goaso Traditional Council has sparked national conversation after announcing a mandatory GHS50 levy per household to support the funeral rites of the late Goasomanhene, Nana Kwasi Bosomprah.

The directive, which applies to every household within the Goaso traditional area, has received mixed reactions, especially after a video explaining the decision went viral.

While some residents view it as a cultural duty to honour a respected traditional leader, others have expressed frustration, citing current economic hardships and questioning the fairness of applying a flat-rate charge to all households.

Critics on social media compared the levy to the UK’s council tax, arguing that such payments should rather go toward essential services like waste management and infrastructure development.

Others described the amount as excessive, proposing that GHS10 or GHS20 would have been more reasonable and affordable.

Despite the backlash, the traditional council maintains that the contribution is essential to provide the late chief with a proper farewell, in line with cultural customs and traditions.

The issue has reignited broader discussions about transparency, tradition, and the financial pressures local authorities place on citizens.
