We have block the return of MTN Zone bundle – Sam George explains

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has revealed that his ministry has rejected a proposal by telecom giant MTN to reintroduce its popular “Zone” data bundle.

Speaking during a live X Space discussion hosted by influencer KalyJay on Thursday, June 12, 2025, the minister explained that while the decision may be unpopular, it is necessary to prevent smaller telecom operators from collapsing.

MTN wants to bring Zone back, but as a minister, I have said no,” Sam George said.

“It’s a bitter pill we have to swallow today so that we don’t end up with a single-player monopoly that will hurt the country,” he added.

He explained that MTN’s Zone bundle allowed the company to drastically undercut prices, which posed a threat to other operators.

Given that MTN controls nearly 80% of the market, allowing such pricing again could wipe out the competition, the minister noted.

“Zone allowed MTN to undercut the market and price below standard rates. If we allow it back now, by the end of the year, other networks may not survive,” he stated.

In response to public concern, he said that alternative options such as increased bonuses and adjusted percentages are being considered to ease the burden on consumers.

Sam George concluded by saying that the government is committed to building a balanced and competitive telecom sector in Ghana.
