We have the best lawyers to defend you in court – Kodua Frimpong tells NPP officials

General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, has given the assurance that the party has enough lawyers to defend its officials and former government appointees if any of them are arrested and taken to court.

He made this statement while addressing the public after the release of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, from the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra on Monday, June 2.

“NPP will demonstrate that we have solid lawyers to defend our officials,” Kodua Frimpong confidently declared.

Chairman Wontumi’s lawyer, Kwame Andy Appiah Kubi, also confirmed to journalists that his client had been released after meeting all the bail conditions.

“Chairman Wontumi has been released. He is here with me,” he said, pointing to Wontumi.

The news of his release was met with excitement and jubilation by NPP supporters who had gathered in front of the EOCO office. They sang party songs and shouted slogans to celebrate the development.

Chairman Wontumi was granted bail to the sum of GH₵50 million with two sureties to be justified. His arrest took place on Tuesday, May 27.

Although EOCO had not officially charged him, Deputy Attorney-General Justice Srem Sai disclosed in a Facebook post that Chairman Wontumi was being investigated for serious crimes including money laundering.

“Suspect BERNARD ANTWI BOASIAKO, a.k.a. Chairman Wontumi, is under investigation for various criminal offences (including fraud, causing financial loss to the State, and money laundering),” he wrote.

Dr. Srem Sai further explained that the investigation also includes asset recovery efforts aimed at preventing the dissipation of what law enforcement suspects to be proceeds of crime.

He added that there is a second strand of investigation involving international law enforcement agencies, as part of a broader probe into an organised crime syndicate. EOCO, he said, is working closely with international partners on this matter.
