We love him – Kumasi traders back Yaw Adutwum in NPP flagbearer race
A group of traders from Kumasi’s Kejetia Railways enclave has thrown its support behind Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum in the race to lead the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 general election.
The traders, mainly dealers in secondhand fabrics, held a press conference on Monday (23 June), calling Dr Adutwum “a visionary leader” who understands their economic struggles.
“We believe Dr Yaw Adutwum is the fresh face the party needs. He connects with ordinary people like us. Under his leadership, we can hope for better policies for market women and traders”, one of the traders said.
“His ability to manage the country’s education sector makes him the best candidate to lead. He has an unblemished record, and the party must consider him”, another said.
The NPP’s flagbearer contest is beginning to gather momentum, with various party figures being tipped to succeed President John Mahama in the next electoral cycle.
Dr Adutwum, currently the Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe and a former Education Minister, has publicly declared his intention to run. However, growing grassroots endorsements such as today’s in Kumasi suggest a building groundswell of support.
The flagbearer race has been slated for 31 January 2026.
