Wontumi Arrest: I will join NPP naked demo because I’ll have a lot to watch – NDC female MP

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Ada Constituency, Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe-Ghansah, has caused a stir after she jokingly offered to join a naked demonstration proposed by a New Patriotic Party (NPP) official over the continued detention of the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Speaking in an interview on Metro TV on Friday, May 30, 2025, the MP, who also serves as the First Deputy Majority Whip in Parliament, made the comment in reaction to a warning by Moses Abor, the former Greater Accra Regional Youth Organiser of the NPP.

Moses Abor Threatens Naked Demo Over Wontumi’s Detention

Moses Abor had earlier declared during a demonstration at EOCO that if Chairman Wontumi is not released, he will mobilize NPP supporters for a naked demonstration to express their frustration.

The passionate NPP youth leader joined other NPP MPs and party foot soldiers on Thursday, May 29, in a protest at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) headquarters. The protest was triggered by what they describe as the unlawful and politically motivated detention of Chairman Wontumi.

According to them, EOCO has kept Wontumi in custody beyond the 48-hour constitutional limit without clear justification, a move they say threatens democracy and violates his human rights.

Moses Abor, visibly angry and emotional, told journalists at the protest:

“We are telling the President of the Republic that he has only two and a half years left, because in the last year, he cannot campaign. We don’t want to advise ourselves. I earlier told my General Secretary that if care is not taken, we will advise ourselves and hit the streets. If care is not taken, we are going to organise a naked demonstration in this country, because what is going on is not fair.”

His words sparked widespread media interest and public conversation, especially after Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe-Ghansah waded into the discussion the following day.

Cudjoe-Ghansah: “I’ll Join Them—There’ll Be a Lot to Watch”

Reacting with a mix of sarcasm and humour, the Ada MP said that she would be happy to participate in the naked demonstration—not because she supports the NPP or believes in their cause, but because she would find it entertaining.

“They should just relax. I even heard they want to do a naked demo. For that one, I will join them — because if men are going to do a naked demo, it means there’ll be a lot of things to watch,” she said with a laugh.

Her remarks, though light-hearted, have drawn both laughter and criticism, depending on political affiliations. Some social media users found it hilarious and a clever way of poking fun at the opposition, while others felt it was an inappropriate comment for a lawmaker.

The MP Calls for Calm and Responsibility

Despite her joking tone, the MP also used the opportunity to call for calm and caution political actors against escalating tension unnecessarily.

She stressed that once you hold public office or involve yourself in high-level politics, scrutiny from institutions like EOCO, the CID, and the NIB is part of the job.

“They should rather cease fire so we can all enjoy the peace we’re currently enjoying. If you want to work in a government institution, being invited to the Police Headquarters, EOCO, NIB, and the rest is part of the package. You want the benefits, but you don’t want to face the scrutiny,” she added.

She encouraged her colleagues in the NPP to allow state institutions to do their work without intimidation or street pressure.

Background: Why Chairman Wontumi Was Arrested

Chairman Wontumi was arrested on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service. Shortly after his release from CID custody, he was re-arrested by EOCO.

He is currently being investigated for serious financial crimes, including:

Fraud

Money laundering

Causing financial loss to the State

EOCO granted him bail on Wednesday, May 28, with a GHS 50 million bond and two justified sureties. As of Friday, May 30, his legal team had managed to secure the sureties with support from top party officials like Bryan Acheampong, but Wontumi remained in custody due to a new legal application that temporarily halted the process.

Political Protests and Pressure Mount

The continued detention of Chairman Wontumi has sparked street protests, political speeches, and press conferences from the NPP.

Notable among them was the march to EOCO by Minority MPs on May 29, who demanded his immediate release. Some held placards accusing the John Mahama government of using state power to intimidate opposition voices.

The NPP sees Wontumi’s arrest as part of a larger political plan to weaken the party in the Ashanti Region, which is considered the party’s stronghold.

Meanwhile, the government, through the Deputy Attorney General, Justice Srem-Sai, has stated clearly that the investigation is based on credible evidence and legal grounds, not political motivations.
