Wontumi, EOCO Saga: Stop your nonsense – Prophet Oduro drags NPP supporters
The General Overseer of Alabaster International Ministries, Prophet Kofi Oduro, has openly criticized the actions of some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who recently gathered at the headquarters of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in support of the Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
In a sermon that was recorded and shared on X (formerly Twitter) on June 1, 2025, Prophet Oduro did not hide his frustration. Preaching passionately to his congregation, he condemned the kind of partisan behaviour that, in his view, damages the fabric of national unity and respect for the rule of law.
He warned Ghanaians against what he described as “blind partisan politics,” stressing that such attitudes do not help the country progress but rather keep it stagnant.
“Stop your nonsense. Where is the rule of law? So, assuming the police arrest me my church members would storm the police station to protest for my release while they don’t know what I have done. Let this foolish mindset of this nation disappear.”
“Why are you there with blind loyalty?… Stop your nonsense. You want to use the noise to cover the truth. How can you build your nation with just an attitude,” he said.
Prophet Oduro’s rebuke came in the heat of national attention on Chairman Wontumi’s arrest and continued detention. Wontumi is being investigated by EOCO for a range of alleged offences, including fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.
Though the court has granted him bail to the tune of GHS50 million, his lawyers have not yet met the full conditions required for his release. EOCO, therefore, has kept him in custody pending compliance with the bail requirements.
The situation sparked outrage among his supporters and drew members of the Minority in Parliament to EOCO’s offices in protest, claiming that Wontumi’s arrest and detention were politically motivated. But for Prophet Oduro, such responses reflect a deeper problem in Ghana’s political culture—a culture where party loyalty often overshadows common sense and justice.
He went on to draw comparisons between Ghana and the United Kingdom, highlighting how strict law enforcement and public discipline have helped developed countries build better systems. He suggested that Ghana’s problems are not only rooted in weak institutions but also in the attitudes of its people—especially those in power who believe they can bypass the law.
“When we went to the UK, there are places where the driving limit is 30km. And you can’t go more than that. If you decide to go against it, you will pay a fine… We should stop that nonsense attitude where people in power can call for the release of a relative when they are arrested,” he added.
Prophet Oduro’s message resonated with many Ghanaians online, with several people reposting and commenting on his sermon in agreement. Others, however, accused him of being overly critical of the NPP, with some supporters of the party arguing that Wontumi’s arrest is just another example of selective justice under the current administration.
This isn’t the first time Prophet Kofi Oduro has spoken against political misconduct in the country. Over the years, he has built a reputation for boldly addressing national issues from his pulpit, often rebuking both politicians and citizens who engage in unethical behaviour.
In the case of Chairman Wontumi, the story is still unfolding. As of now, EOCO has not released any detailed statements on the progress of the investigations, but they have maintained their decision to keep him in custody until his bail conditions are met.
Meanwhile, the situation has created tension between EOCO and some members of the political class, especially those in the NPP. Some Minority Members of Parliament have condemned EOCO’s actions, describing them as politically driven and unjust. They argue that Wontumi, despite being a high-profile figure, deserves to be treated fairly under the law, just like any other citizen.
However, Prophet Oduro insists that the law must be allowed to work without political interference. He emphasized that people should not protest the arrest of individuals simply because they belong to their political party or hold influential positions.
To many observers, Prophet Oduro’s words serve as a reminder of the urgent need for Ghana to strengthen its democratic principles—not just on paper, but in the behaviour of its citizens and leaders alike. For him, it’s not enough to shout slogans about justice and accountability; there must be a genuine commitment to doing what is right, regardless of political affiliation.
As the legal case against Chairman Wontumi continues, it remains to be seen how the matter will be resolved. But what is clear from Prophet Oduro’s message is that some members of the religious community are not afraid to challenge political parties and call for a higher standard of national discipline.
The message has sparked a national conversation, not only about Wontumi’s arrest but about how political loyalty often blinds people from standing for truth, accountability, and justice.
