Your campaign strategy is dangerous – Kennedy Agyapong told
Veteran New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart Nana Akomea has firmly rejected Kennedy Agyapong’s recent claims that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s religious background contributed to the NPP’s loss in the 2024 general elections.
In an interview with Citi News, Nana Akomea described Agyapong’s comments as “not tenable” and warned that such statements amount to a “dangerous campaign strategy.”
Kennedy Agyapong, who contested and lost to Dr. Bawumia in the party’s presidential primaries, had alleged that Christian voters rejected Bawumia because he is a Muslim — leading to the NPP’s defeat.
But Akomea dismissed the claim as unfounded and divisive.
“Even Mahama, as President, lost the 2016 elections, but nobody said he lost because of his religion,” Akomea noted. “So the impression that Bawumia — or the NPP — lost because the candidate was a Muslim is not even tenable.”
He further dismantled Kennedy Agyapong’s assertion by pointing to the results of the party’s internal primaries.
“Look, if the NPP wanted only Christian leaders, how come in last year’s presidential primary, there were nine Christians and only one Muslim?” he asked.
“In both stages — the super delegates and the main election — Bawumia won convincingly against all of them, including Kennedy Agyapong himself.”
Akomea concluded, “So what is the basis of the belief that Christians in the NPP do not want a Muslim candidate? It doesn’t hold any water at all.”
Kennedy Agyapong had also argued that the NPP tradition does not reward candidates who perform poorly in general elections. “Let no one be deceived,” he said. “Our party has a history of rewarding strong candidates. If you lead us into an election and perform abysmally, you should not expect another chance.”
But his remarks — particularly the religious angle — have drawn widespread criticism from both senior party members and grassroots supporters.
