“Completely unfair” – Pochettino on comparisons to the old Chelsea

Mauricio Pochettino has described comparisons between the Chelsea of today and the Chelsea of old as “completely unfair.”

Pochettino is under huge pressure ahead of tonight’s game against Newcastle with the Blues languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League table and in danger of missing out on European football for the second consecutive season.

The fans turned against the 52 year old in the draw with Brentford and the Argentine is now facing an uphill task to win supporters back on side.

One constant since the club was taken over by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital in May 2022 has been comparisons to the winning Chelsea of old.

Pochettino feels these comparisons are unfair and in quotes picked up by the Daily Mail said: “It is completely unfair, sometimes, to compare different periods of the club as the circumstances are different than in the past.”

“It is impossible to see if you are better, another is better, or now someone different can do worse or better. It is a different project.”

“Today is a different Chelsea. If you are going to judge us and analyse the situation compared to the past of Chelsea, hey, for sure, no one is going to win.”

Pochettino will be hoping he can guide his side to a much needed win against Newcastle tonight to alleviate some pressure on him.

He signed a two year deal last summer with the option of a third and the club plan to sit down with him at the end of the season to discuss his future but that could change if results don’t pick up.
