High voter apathy in Ashanti and Greater Accra, a disturbing course for the NPP?

In a recent revelation made by the Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, Musa Dankwa, it has been uncovered that both the Ashanti Region and Greater Accra exhibit concerning levels of voter apathy leading up to the December 7 elections.

According to the research conducted, the Ashanti Region reported a staggering 23% rate of voter apathy among its electorate, closely followed by Greater Accra with a 22% rate. These two regions have historically played pivotal roles in determining the outcome of general elections within the Republic.

Traditionally, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) garners a significant portion of its votes from the Ashanti Region, while Greater Accra remains a swing region with the potential to sway election results.

The forthcoming report also sheds light on voter apathy in the Eastern Region, where 8% of electorates have indicated their intention not to participate in the upcoming polls. Additionally, a smaller percentage of 2% expressed reluctance in exercising their franchise on December 7 in the Volta Region.

Speaking on the matter, Musa Dankwa highlighted the disappointment with both major parties, NPP and NDC, particularly the ruling NPP, has been a significant factor contributing to voter apathy.

“I mean they are just disapoointed sometimes in both NPP and NDC but the disappointment is really in this ruling government,” he told Host Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah.

This revelation raises concerns, particularly as it pertains to the strongholds of the ruling NPP, contrasting with lower levels of apathy observed in the Volta and Northern Regions, which are traditionally aligned with the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Dankwa further emphasized that the high levels of apathy in these crucial regions could significantly impact the election outcome. He noted that if the NDC manages to secure more votes in the Ashanti Region, a stronghold of the NPP, it could pose challenges for the ruling party.

“In a scenario where the NDC gains more votes in the Ashanti Region, which traditionally supports the NPP, it could put the chance of NPP wining the region in jeopardy,” he added.
