“It was a mistake” – Former Blues defender reveals which player club should have signed

Former Chelsea defender William Gallas believes the Blues made a “mistake” by not signing Cristiano Ronaldo.

Following his release by Manchester United in November 2022 Ronaldo was linked with a shock move to Stamford Bridge with the Blues looking for a goalscorer but he eventually signed for Saudi side Al Nassr.

Todd Boehly was reportedly the driving force behind a potential move for Ronaldo as he searched for a marquee signing but then manager Thomas Tuchel wasn’t keen on the move for the five time Ballon d’Or winner.

Chelsea continued to spend big money and signed talented attackers like Christopher Nkunku, Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson.

There were no doubt people who were left disappointed that Ronaldo didn’t sign for Chelsea and former defender Gallas believes the club made a mistake by not signing the Portuguese superstar.

Speaking to Genting Casino he said: “Chelsea made a mistake by not signing Cristiano Ronaldo. He was available to sign and Chelsea would have been a good club for him.”

“Everyone knows how important Ronaldo can be in the dressing room, he brings a winning mentality and it could have benefited the squad. It was a mistake by Chelsea.”

We will never know what impact Ronaldo could have had at Stamford Bridge but it’s clear that Chelsea’s youthful squad could do with more experience and players with a winning mentality as they struggle with a huge lack of consistency and ability to see games out.
