Oh Lord, Jesus, it’s been more than 10 whole years since Sweet Brown took the internet by storm with her catchphrase: “Ain’t nobody got time for that”.
The Oklahoma City resident became a viral sensation a decade ago in 2012 when she was interviewed by local news station KFOR News Channel 4 after safely evacuating her apartment building that was set on fire.
And while many would be in shock over such an incident, Brown – whose real name Kimberly Wilkins – somehow managed to entertain the masses as she recounted hilarious details about how she escaped the life-threatening incident – with ‘no shoes or nothing Jesus’.
The interview originally aired on US TV on 8 April 2012, and was subsequently uploaded to YouTube where it struck a chord with users and instantly became a viral hit.
A decade on, our lives are still the better for Brown’s catchphrases, as well as the countless memes and autotune remixes that were produced from the original 41-second clip.
And it’s clear Brown still has fans out there, with someone writing on social media this week: “I ALWAYS got time for dat.”
Another wrote: “I love this to this day!!!” while someone else said: Does she still have bronchitis? Ain’t nobody got 10 years for that.”
After the video was released, Brown became a minor celebrity – starring in national commercials, being a guest on TV shows, including Comedy Central’s Tosh.0, was played by Queen Latifah in a skit for Jimmy Kimmel, and was even quoted by Beyonce at the Superbowl.
But that’s not all, as the viral star even enjoyed a brief film career, appearing in Tyler Perry’s flick A Madea Christmas as herself in 2013.
Following her short foray into film, she turned her attention for a brief time to condiments in 2013 and sold the Sweet Brown’s Lord Jesus It’s a Fire BBQ Sauce. Sadly, the sauce is no longer available.
Brown’s 15 minutes of fame wasn’t without controversy, however.
In 2013, she sued Apple and a radio program called The Bob Rivers Show for unauthorised use of her likeness and voice when her now-infamous news clip was turned into a song called I Got Bronchitis.
According to NewsOK at the time, Brown filed a lawsuit, saying that not only was the song up for sale and that The Bob Rivers Show was making a profit from her, but that she never gave her consent for the clip to be used, despite the radio station claiming she had.
