Another devastating injury creates slight chance Kepa could get another shot at Real Madrid dream

Poor Thibaut Courtois was on the road to recovery from an ACL injury, and was making great progress. After picking it up on the eve of the season, he had worked his way back to the point where he was already training pretty actively, seemingly just a few weeks from rejoining his teammates and with the outside possibility of playing in the final few games of the season.

But the brutal news is filtering through from Madrid that the former Chelsea man has now damaged the meniscus in his other knee, and left training in tears today.

Chelsea loaned Kepa Arrizabalaga to Madrid in response to Courtois’ injury, and it’s been a disaster, like so many other loans this season. He lost his place to youngster Andriy Lunin, and is now riding the bench.

But with Courtois now presumably out until quite far into next season, there is a question over whether Madrid would keep Kepa for another year, even just to compete with Lunin. They clearly don’t rate him much, but if he’s just a backup anyway, might they enjoy maintaining that continuity, at the right price?
