Maintaining good personal hygiene is essential for all women, but it becomes even more crucial during pregnancy to ensure the health and well-being of both the mother and the developing baby. Pregnancy is a beautiful time in a woman’s life but it can be challenging for the body. It brings a variety of changes in a woman’s body, therefore personal hygiene becomes extremely important.

In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr Hira Mardi, Consultant – Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Manipal Hospital, Varthur Road and Whitefield, Bangalore explained personal hygiene tips for mothers during their pregnancy.

Hygiene Tips During Pregnancy

Regular Bathing

Pregnant women should bathe regularly to keep their bodies clean and fresh. Daily bathing can help prevent skin infections and keep the body odour at bay.

Dental Care

Hormonal changes during pregnancy can increase the risk of developing gum disease and other dental problems. Therefore, it is important to maintain good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing regularly and visiting the dentist for cleanings and check-ups.

Clothing

Wearing clean and breathable clothing is important during pregnancy, as it can help prevent skin irritations and infections. Loose-fitting clothes made from natural fibres such as cotton can help keep the body cool and comfortable.

Hand Hygiene

Proper hand hygiene is crucial to prevent the spread of infections. Pregnant women should wash their hands regularly with soap and water, especially before preparing or eating food, and after using the restroom.

Feminine Hygiene

Pregnant women need to pay special attention to feminine hygiene. Using mild, fragrance-free soaps for washing the genital area and changing sanitary pads frequently can help prevent infections.

Foot Care

Swollen feet and an increased risk of fungal infections are common during pregnancy. To maintain foot hygiene, pregnant women should keep their feet clean and dry, wear comfortable and supportive footwear, and avoid going barefoot in public places.

Hair Care

Using gentle shampoos and conditioners to keep the scalp clean and healthy is important during pregnancy. It’s also advisable to avoid chemical treatments and excessive heat styling.

Sleep Hygiene

Proper sleep hygiene is essential for overall well-being. Pregnant women should aim for adequate rest, maintain a comfortable sleeping environment, and practise good sleep habits.

Breast Care

During pregnancy, practising good breast hygiene is essential. Many women experience colostrum leaks, a yellowish fluid, toward the end of the second trimester. It is important to clean the breasts regularly, as dampness can lead to itchiness and potential hygiene issues. Changing bra pads frequently after they become wet can help maintain cleanliness and comfort. Additionally, if nipple cracks or dryness occur, using lotions or creams recommended by a healthcare professional can help soothe and protect the skin.

By following these personal hygiene tips, pregnant women can help reduce the risk of infections, promote overall well-being, and ensure a healthy pregnancy. However, it is always best to consult with a healthcare provider for personalised advice based on individual needs and medical history.
