“I think you have to be very careful” – Lampard on Pochettino criticism

Frank Lampard feels criticism of Mauricio Pochettino is a bit harsh given the situation Chelsea as a club find themselves in.

Pochettino is under pressure with the Blues currently 11th in the Premier League and facing the possibility of missing out on European football for the second consecutive season.

Supporters turned against the Argentine during the draw with Brentford and there have been reports that senior figures at the club are split over his future at Chelsea.

The 52 year old signed a two year contract with the option for a further year last summer and the plan has always been to sit down at the end of the season to discuss his future.

Club legend Lampard has now given his thoughts on the situation and believes people should think twice before pinning to much blame on the manager.

Speaking to JOE he said: “I think in the summer, players moved on, perhaps rightfully so, and new players came in. I think that will have freshened up the feel. Pre-season for the new manager, respect to Mauricio because he’s known as a good manager and rightfully so. He deserves respect.”

“But in my opinion, it was going to be a challenge again to keep moving forwards quickly like people would expect, and that’s proven the case. So I think you have to be very careful to point fingers at the manager himself, or at young players who are trying to find form in the team that hasn’t got that experienced spine there.”

Monday’s victory against Newcastle was huge for Pochettino and he needs to follow that up with a win on Sunday against Leicester in the FA Cup.
