“A bit of passion and courage” – Palmer reflects on Newcastle win

Cole Palmer believes Chelsea showed “a bit of passion and courage” in last night’s 3-2 win over Newcastle.

Palmer was once again the standout performer with the 21 year old scoring and assisting in the same game for the fifth time this season, a Premier League high.

The former Manchester City man got an assist in the opening minutes when his shot was cleverly flicked in by Nicolas Jackson before giving the Blues the lead with a smart finish after Alexander Isak had drawn Newcastle level in the first half.

Mykhailo Mudryk’s brilliant solo goal secured the three points but a thunderbolt from Jacob Murphy set up a nervy finish as Mauricio Pochettino’s men managed to hold on.

Palmer now has 11 goals and eight assists in the Premier League this season and no player aged 21 or under has been directly involved in more goals in Europe’s top five leagues this season than him (19).

Palmer believes the Blues showed passion and courage last night and speaking to the club’s official website said: “We had the courage to play which is what we need as a young team, we are going to make mistakes, so it’s about going on to the next one and the next one.”

“We’ve had some difficult results recently, the cup final versus Liverpool, the game against Wolves so to get points is vital for us. I think we showed a bit of passion and courage. Winning those second balls and not getting bullied.”

“When they scored we thought we knew we had to defend better than before so we could get those three points and take a step in the right direction. It’s about taking it game by game and having good performances.

“If we win football matches, the fans will be happy and we want to do that for them. It’s about taking it game by game and seeing how high we can finish.”

Palmer and Chelsea will be back in action on Sunday in the FA Cup quarter final against Leicester with a place at Wembley up for grabs.
