Jamie Carragher is not happy with the reasons Chelsea might have to sell Conor Gallagher for this summer.
Gallagher is having a superb season at Chelsea and has been a key player for Mauricio Pochettino making 36 appearances in all competitions.
Despite this questions continue to surround the England internationals future with his current contract expiring in 2025 and there currently being no significant breakthrough in talks over a new deal.
The 24 year old has made it clear he wants to extend his stay at the club he came through the ranks at and Pochettino has also expressed his desire for the midfielders stay at Stamford Bridge to be extended.
If Gallagher were to be sold this summer he would go down as pure profit on the books because he’s an academy graduate which would help the Blues comply with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.
Sky Sports pundit Carragher has criticised the regulations that incentivise clubs for selling their academy stars and used Gallagher as an example.
Speaking on The Overlap’s Fan Debate Show he said: “It’s beneficial to the club to sell a homegrown player. It’s an unlevel playing field. If you’re a homegrown player compared to someone bought in and cost money, this guy is going to get moved on quicker when that’s his club.”
“You think of Conor Gallagher now, that’s his club where he’s come through, and he’s the one that’s actually going to be sold or maybe moved on because of the rules.”
“The academy player can’t be the solution to the problem.”
Gallagher is a doubt for Monday night’s game against Newcastle due to having a virus this week.
