How Often Should You Use Face Masks For Healthy Skin? Dermatologist Explains

Face masks have become a common item in skincare regimens worldwide, offering the promise of rejuvenating, cleansing and nourishing skin but with many options, provided they are used often enough identifying it can be confusing. While face masks have many benefits, overuse or improper use can cause side effects. So, when is it appropriate to use a face mask to tighten your skin? In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Monica Kapoor, celebrity cosmetologist and Director of Flawless Cosmetic Clinic & ILACAD Institute explained how often we should use face masks over our skin.

According to Dr Kapoor, before adding a face mask to your skincare routine, it’s important to know your skin type. Whether your skin is oily, dry, combination, or dry determines how often you need to use the mask. Oily skin may find frequent use beneficial in controlling excess oil, while those with sensitive skin may need a gentler, less frequent application and they have avoided anger.

General Instructions: As a rule, dermatologists usually recommend using a face mask 1-3 times a week. However, this can vary depending on the type of mask and individual skin needs. Here are some excerpts:

Hydrating Mask: If you have dry skin, adding a hydrating mask to your routine 2-3 times a week can help replenish hydration and tighten skin. Look for masks with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin and honey to hydrate.

Clay masks: Clay masks are especially beneficial for oily or acne-prone skin because they help absorb excess oil and close pores. Using a clay mask once or twice a week can help to prevent oiliness and prevent excessive skin breakouts.

Exfoliating Mask: A mask you make of moisturising ingredients such as alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs).

Soothing masks: For individuals with sensitive or irritable skin, choosing a soothing mask with ingredients such as aloe vera, chamomile, or oatmeal can provide relief. This mask can be applied 1-2 times a week to soothe inflammation and soothe stressed skin.

Listen to your skin: While these guidelines are a start, it’s important to pay attention to how your skin reacts to regular mask use. If you notice symptoms of irritation, redness, or increased irritation, consider reducing the frequency or switching to milder medications. Conversely, if you don’t get what you want, gradually increasing the frequency can be beneficial.

Wash your face before applying the mask to ensure proper absorption of active ingredients. Follow the instructions provided with the mask regarding the timing of application and removal. Try multi-masking to treat skin problems at the same time. Remember to moisturise after using the mask to mask the benefits and maintain skin hydration. Maintaining healthy, glowing skin is important to maintain balance when using a face mask. By understanding your skin, following general instructions, and listening to skin feedback, you can effectively incorporate a face mask into your skincare routine.
