List of allowances Teacher unions request from government

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) to the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations (MELR) in Ghana. The letter requests a meeting to discuss outstanding allowances for teachers.

The letter states that the teacher unions met with the government team on December 14, 2023, and discussed ground rules, non-financial items, and financial items.

The unions say they submitted a list of 15 allowances to the government team, but have not heard back since. The following allowances are the ones being discussed now

  1. CPD
  2. Deprived Area Allwance
  3. Teaching/Assessment allowance
  4. Housing/Rent allowance
  5. Transport/Commuting allowance
  6. Utility subsidy

The letter also references a press release from the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) on March 20, 2024, which states that the government is showing good faith towards the teacher unions. However, the teacher unions say that the FWSC press release does not address their outstanding allowances.

The teacher unions are requesting a meeting with the MELR to discuss the outstanding allowances and reach an agreement.
