Is Excessive Sunlight Good For Your Hair Health?

We have heard it said by our mothers and grandmothers, ‘We did not bleach our hair in sunlight.’ Have you ever tried to understand the relationship between sunlight and our hair? Does sunlight have any impact on our hair? Well, excessive exposure to sunlight weakens the hair’s protein structure, de-moisturises it, and reduces elasticity, because of which hair breaks easily.

In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr Meera Adhikari, Cosmetologist and Trichologist, Adhikari Lifeline Cosmetics Center explained the possible effects of sunlight on our hair health.

Sunlight For Hair Health

Sunlight is a powerful force that impacts the health and vitality of our hair in profound ways. From its essential role in Vitamin D production to its effects on hair proteins and pigments, sunlight’s influence is undeniable. However, excessive UV exposure can lead to damage, weakening the structure of our hair and making it more prone to breakage.

To safeguard our hair from the harmful effects of sunlight, it’s essential to take proactive measures. Using hair products with enhanced UV protection and incorporating leave-in conditioners with SPF can provide added defence.

Additionally, avoiding peak UV hours and wearing head coverings can help minimise direct exposure. Maintaining a nutrient-rich diet and hydrating our hair with homemade masks are also crucial practices for promoting hair health.

Simple home remedies such as oiling with warm coconut or almond oil, applying egg masks for hydration, soothing the scalp with aloe vera, and stimulating hair growth with methi and yoghurt masks can work wonders.

By integrating these tips into our hair care routine, we can ensure that our hair remains strong, vibrant, and resilient in the face of sunlight’s influence. With thoughtful care and attention, we can embrace the benefits of sunlight while protecting our hair from harm.
